With the album release of "Soul Sisters", we felt it necessary to offer the biography of a magnificent artist who has been featured on this album: Rhoda Scott.
Rhoda Scott, is an organist and American jazz singer born July 3, 1938, to Dorothy in the State of New Jersey.
After passing from the prestigious Manhattan School Of Music, she studied at the Conservatoire de Fontainebleau (France) with Nadia Boulanger. Rhoda Scott combines traditional skills with a great talent for jazz and religious music.
The Ambassador of the Hammond organ has enthused a large audience around the world for forty years. She has played with the biggest and the best of jazz including Ray Charles, George Benson, Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Morrow.
Nicknamed "The Barefoot Lady" (the Barefoot Organist), Rhoda Scott was discovered by Count Basie and he immediately urged her to join his club in Harlem. It is there that Eddie Barclay and his partner Raoul Saint-Yves, always on the lookout for new talent, offered her to come to Paris, where they engaged her to perform in his tavern, the Bilboquet, from July 1968.
She married Raoul Saint-Yves, a former actor and singer (aka Raoul singing waiter), on October 3, 1969 at the American Church in Paris .
Rhoda Scott has played, including at the Olympia, as part of a singing tour of Gilbert Becaud the early '70s, then recorded a concert soon after in that music hall, accompanied by Joe Thomas(flute / tenor sax) and Cees Kranenburg Jr. (drums).
Rhoda has a full talent makes it so comfortable in classical music in the jazz, gospel or the blues. Gifted with an exceptional musical memory, for example, she knows more than a thousand songs by heart and she made most of his repertoire. Besides, she never needed an evening program and plays by the inspiration of the moment and especially by the public reaction.
It creates, at the Vienna Festival 2004, "Lady Quartet. WithSophie Alour (tenor saxophone), Bilberry Besson (flugelhorn) andLisa Cat-Berro (alto saxophone) and Julie Saury (drums), she turns in jazz clubs and record an album January 21, 2008 in"Sunset" (60 rue des Lombards, Paris).
Rhoda Scott loves France and owns property in Orne Coulonges to the Sablon, near Nogent-le-Rotrou (28), where she resides periodically.

Reality TV invades Jackson family too!

Adding a little spice television The A & E is in negotiations to launch a reality show about the family of Michael Jacson. Temporarily have called the program "Jackson Family Dynasty" and is planning the first program is a documentary of one hour was recorded before the death of the king of pop.

I just heard a few samplers by Chrisette Michele on Myspace. I am surprised that she has a range that most of the artists of current day seem to be missing. I also like teh fcat that she doesnot resort to the reverb sound that has become so annoying because of the hip-hop scene that has become so generic that I sometimes have a tough time differenciating work of one artist from another.

Getting Nostalgic with Modern Talking

I just bough a box set of Modren talking and I must tell you that it was like my youth was back all over again. Just to hear the rythmic beat of their songs made my feet thump. How we forget the great music that they gave us in the era when music was pure and there was no hate or lust in the lyrics. Unlike the singers these days the artists back then were not interested in seducing us or arousing our racial/sexual emotions. All they wanted to give us was pure music. Pet Shop Boys, Moderan Talking and Kraftwerk come to mind as hugely popular groups in the small third world city that I grew up in.
Even Madonna was not so "in your face" back then. sigh... I wish this hip hop madness would end and we could have the beat back...
Thank you Modern talking for bringing back these memories for me and keeping a part of me young forever...

Paul Newman is no More

It is with great sorrow that I have to report that beloved actor and humanitarian Paul Newman has died of cancer in his home in Westport, Connecticut. He was 83.

Newman, whose stunning blue eyes and immense capacity for generosity made him one of the most cherished personalities of his era, was an extremely private man and was rumored to have been seriously ill for several months. He had canceled some planned appearances in the summer.

Born in Shaker Heights, Ohio in 1925, Newman first made his mark on the stage and TV but his startling good looks and undeniable presence destined him to appear on the screen. Newman often played troubled characters with streaks of nobility such as “Fast” Eddie Felson in The Hustler, and the eponymous, irrepressible roles of Hud Bannon in Hud and the imprisoned rebel, Cool Hand Luke.

But it was his role as Butch in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, opposite Robert Redford, that thrust him into the realm of superstardom. He followed it with other classic films including The Sting, The Towering Inferno, Slap Shot, and The Life and Times of Judge Roy Bean.

Newman was a star right out of the gate, however, being nominated for an Oscar for his third major role as Brick Pollitt, the drunken husband locked in a loveless marriage with Elizabeth Taylor’s smoldering “Maggie the Cat” in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof.

Newman’s real-life relationship was exactly the opposite. He was married to actress Joanne Woodward for 50 years. The two worked together in 1958’s The Long Hot Summer. It was the same year they were wed and that Woodward won an Oscar for her work in 1957’s The Three Faces of Eve.

It was not the end of their professional collaborations. Newman also directed her to another Oscar nomination in Rachel, Rachel (the film picked up four nominations, including Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay by their lifelong friend, Stewart Stern). Newman also directed Woodward in The Glass Managerie and starred with her in Mr. & Mrs. Bridge.

Nominated for seven Oscars (including Best Actor nods for Absence of Malice and The Verdict), Newman finally won on his eighth nomination for his reprisal role of Fast Eddie in Martin Scorsese’s The Color of Money (he would be nominated two more times afterward, for Best Actor in Nobody’s Fool and Best Supporting Actor in Road to Perdition).

But of all the trophies Newman won or was awarded in his life, none seem more appropriate than his honorary 1994 Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Newman’s charitable giving, from his Hole-in-the-Wall Gang, a camp for seriously ill children or his proceeds from Newman’s Own, are legendary. As was the man. As will be his legacy.

Newman is survived by Woodward, his five daughters and several grandchildren. A son, Scott Newman, died of an accidental drug overdose in 1978.

Country Singer Sara Evans Marries

Sara Evans has married former University of Alabama quarterback Jay Barker. While the publicist for the singer has affirmed the news there are still not much details available as I write this blog.

The couple's seven children, including four from Barker's previous marriage, attended the ceremony. While Nashville songwriter Marcus Hummon also showed up to sing "God Bless the Broken Road" (a song he co-wrote with Rascal Flatts), Christian minister Joe Beam presided over the ceremony. Evans and Barker met through Beam last year, as they both went through divorces.

"He was our own personal matchmaker," Evans told People. "I think God told Joe to get us together."

The heartthrob singer believes the stunning actress - who gave birth to daughter Honor Marie on Saturday (07.06.08) - has the right qualities to become a perfect parent.

You Can remember Petula Clark for so many reasons - Her acting, her singing or just her beauty. I am filled with her music so much that I do not see her as an actress.

The first I heard of her was when I heard the song "A Groovy Kind of Love" a duet that she sang with Sir Cliff. This song was no patch on the version of Phil Collins and all was forgotten. That was until I came across the eight album set that I was gifted by some one very dear to me.

Those eight albums kept playing on and on and today I ahve to admit I am glad I gave Petula a second chance and did not dismiss her after that disasterous first encounter.

I was listening to James Blunt today and just remembered one of the songs that I used to listen to all the time. The song in question was “Twist in my Sobriety” by Tanita Tikaram. I ways more than one the song, the feel and the context were much ahead of its time and that is what struck me as I remembered and started humming the song. I went around digging and found the song. Refreshing …

Artists like Tanita do not come everyday… It is a pity that her volume is work is not as expanded as that of Sir Cliff… I would have loved to have hours and hours of unbroken playlist of her songs but alas, she has not made that many records. Here is a list of al her releases

Sir Cliff and Ridley Scott

I got hold of one of the podcast interviews of Sir Cliff and on it he has said how much he would like to meet Ridley Scott and how much he admires his work. This is uncanny... I admire Scott's worka nd I am particularly fond of his movie "A Good Year" . It is surprising how much I have in common with Sir Cliff (including liking for Indian food).

Ridley Scott is a director who has churned many great movies, none greater than Gladiator, and has been one of the most admired directors in Hollywood today. I am not too sure about Cliff's observation about him and Scott doing something together. A fan of Cliff I am, however, even I agree that his appeal to a non-cliff admirer today is close to zero. He is giving us great music but nothing that the generation Y wants. Howevr, just for the sake of Novelty I do hope that they come together and do something. If nothing do something for the sake of You Tube and Rapidshare...

Overheard someone playing a song of Talat in my office and then sat down to download a few songs while my work suffered! What a voice. He had the power to bring melody to almost any song that he sang. He was certainly not versatile, in fact he was a very limited singer, if you ask me... It is only natural that people find a better choice to listen to Rafi or Kishore who had more range of songs and who could emote much more in their songs.

Talat, will always be a companion for the soft moments when you are alone in your room, with a cup of tea maybe, and looking out of the window.

I was dusting my old tapes when I came across a cassette that I had almost forgotten about. It is an old compilation that I bought for about 15 Rs. (about $0.40) way back in the 80s. One of the songs on the tape was "Meet me halfway" by Crystal Gayle. It is a beautiful song that I think should be hall of fame but I was surprised to see that it has never been included in any of her "Best of" compilations.

I guess no one works better with "best of" compilations than Cliff Richard. I have three of his best of compilations which are just a song or two away from each other. Why would someone with more hits than any other artist not be diverse in his song choice for the compilations.
